One of the hardest questions to understand when it comes to choosing a design firm, is why do companies think we all sell yellow pencils? It appears it is just a matter of deciding which design firm they would like to do business with because the end product will all look like the same yellow pencil. A working relationship is important, but all design firms are not created equal. Many times, the work that is shown as a sample of their capabilities does not represent the present talent that is in that office today.

I would recommend a design firm where the president of the company is also the lead designer. He doesn't have to do all the work but his standard will be adhered to. Many firms employ account executes to service their accounts. To often the account ex makes decisions that should be left to the creative team that is producing the product and maintaining the brand.

Choose a design firm with a long track record with their present and previous accounts. Check with printers and other vendors to get a feel for how the firm works outside of your office. Remember they represent you at the printer as well as on a photo shoot. And lastly, pick a firm that is not a yes man that will do anything to keep the account. A design firm brings a valuable outside perspective to your business and positioning. Find a firm that is willing to become a part of your long-term communications efforts, not one that is just interested in the next invoice.
